Writer’s Room
A virtual space for filmmakers to ideate, draft, and collaborate on screenplays intended for production.
The Purpose
Writing is often a solitary activity and inviting others into that process can feel uncomfortable. But writing isn’t just one thing; it's a shorthand for a multitude of skills — world building, character design, plotting, tension, dialogue — and every writer has different strengths and weaknesses in these areas. By writing as a group, we push past these weaknesses, bypass our internal voices, and build upon the ideas of others.

The Approach
10 Members, 10 Weeks, 10 Screenplays.
Writer’s Room members meet virtually for 90 minutes on a weekly basis to develop new story ideas and turn them into completed scripts. Rather than workshopping existing ideas, this group builds stories from scratch. Doing so gives everyone equal stake in an idea and the ability to consistently train their writing skills as the weeks go on.
Each meeting starts with a randomly assigned set of parameters in order to kick off the ideation phase. This includes a genre, theme, and character type. The meeting will be recorded & transcribed for reference. A moderator will be present to guide the discussion and make sure everyone is given time to speak.
Generate random parameters for this week’s story, and begin brainstorming ideas within those parameters. After the allotted time is up, the group will vote on which idea to continue working on.
First 30 minutes:
Being developing that selected idea into a rough outline or treatment. After time is up, a group member will be randomly assigned to write a draft. They have until the following week’s meeting to complete it.
second 30 minutes:
Read & review the completed draft from the previous week. Discuss whether the group wants to collaborate on getting it produced, or if a member wants to continue work on it on their own.
last 30 minutes:
Membership
You don’t have to be a writer with a capital W to join. However, here are some things that are required to join:
A computer or phone with a camera & mic to join our virtual meetings
A willingness to partake for at least two sessions, ideally on a regular basis
The trust to openly share your thoughts & ideas
A respect for the contributions of other members
Accepting the open-source agreement for ideas generated as a group (see below)
Members can use & modify any ideas generated by this group for their own projects, whether that be a writing project, a film production or otherwise. But to continue the spirit of collaboration, please give other members the option to participate first, if they’d like to.
By participating in this group, members must agree that any concepts, prompts, or story frameworks generated collaboratively may be adapted and modified by other members for their original works, provided that:
Credit is given (e.g., "Initial concept developed by members of Writer’s Room"), and
The idea is significantly transformed into a new, distinct expression.
Note: Copyright remains with the individual who writes the final script. Raw ideas, concepts, treatments, and drafts are considered shared territory.
